StarLink starts operation in Jamaica

Must Read

StarLink which is a company developed by Elon Musk and his team to bring low latency and high-speed broadband internet access to the world has started operations in Jamaica.

Reports have been swirling around the media for some time now about a possible StarLink service being provided to Jamaicans.

Behind the scenes, StarLink uses satellites within a certain level of orbit around the globe to bring internet access to areas where it was not possible before. Even if there was internet access within some of these areas it was pretty slow.

This is a positive move for Jamaica, it is yet to be seen how it stacks up among the two major telecommunications service providers: Digicel and Flow.

Regardless of StarLink’s value proposition and target audience, Elon Musk hinted in February of this year that StarLink had over 250,000 terminals, and given the $100/month for StarLink’s service, that’s $300,000,000 USD a year.

It’s a service that is steadily growing and when it hits critical mass it could be raking in billions for SpaceX which is the parent company.

For Jamaicans, I am sure that people will want to try this service. As for the major telecommunication providers, this will probably push them to invest more in infrastructure and provide a better service.

If StarLink service is economically feasible for the average resident, I am sure that they would not hesitate to switch from their local internet provider.
