GroceryList Jamaica is a digital grocery shopping company that allows residents in the diaspora to shop for anyone at home in Jamaica and will enable the products to be delivered to them.
It’s an app that became necessary when business partner and CEO Rory Richard’s mother had difficulties shopping at home due to an illness. That was when he and Co-founder Jermain Morgan came up with the idea and then went about implementing it.
The convenience of going on an app and shopping for your loved ones at home or even a friend who doesn’t have the ability to do so, due to financial reasons or health is a major selling point that can gather a profitable customer base over time.
The company released a press statement stating that they are steadily growing and at the moment they are connected to 150 local stores and operate across all 14 parishes.
General Foods supermarket and Shoppers Delight in Kingston, Giant Family Mart and L & Y Supermarket in St Mary, National Self Serve and Valu Mart Food Store in Clarendon, and Best Value Supermarket along with Bogue Supermarket in St James are among the first outlets connected to the platform.
Rory Richards stated that an important goal for GroceryListJa is, “to ease the economic burden on Jamaican households as well as empower Jamaicans to earn through an additional income stream”
In summary, there is definitely a market for GroceryListJa not just in Jamaica but also in the Caribbean. It’s a pretty niche idea but the convenience of shopping for a friend overseas or a loved one makes it pretty exciting and tempting.
Oftentimes, Jamaicans would have to send money through Western Union in order to help someone out and that sometimes can be a burden. This cuts out a lot of that process which there is definitely a market for.
