Elon Musk enters the AI race with new company

0

Reports are coming out that Elon Musk has started a new AI company called X.ai to compete with the likes of Google, OpenAI, and others. Elon Musk was one of the co-founders of OpenAI in 2015 when he and other Silicon Valley tech leaders decided to start an AI company.

This was to act as a counterbalance to others within the market such as the big players like Google who could have a monopoly on the market if they are the ones to control the core technology and shape the industry.

Elon Musk saw this as a threat to the world because artificial intelligence is a powerful technology. If it is in the hands of a few companies that can be a bit dangerous due to the power and influence that company can have.

OpenAI started off as none profit and later became a for-profit company in 2019 with a $1 billion dollar investment from Microsoft, a year after Elon Musk had left the company.

The departure of Elon Musk wasn’t as smooth as everyone thought, there were a lot of internal battles going on and from a CEO of Elon’s stature, internal politics can drain a lot of energy and focus, hence he chose to double down on Tesla and SpaceX. Since Elon Left the company, OpenAI has been iterating on its machine-learning models and the rewards are now paying off.

Late last year they launched ChatGPT which has turned out to be a massive success. Microsoft further invested another $10 billion into the company which further cemented its influence over the company.

This success has caught the eyes of key tech players, now we are caught in an AI race among the top tech companies and Elon Musk doesn’t want to feel left out. That’s why X.ai was born. There have been rumors that he has been purchasing a lot of GPU cards to train these models

It’s going to be interesting to see if this project will become a success, one thing is for sure that we have learned over the years is to not bet against Elon Musk.

GK ONE: Fintech Juggernaut in the making

0

Just like its counterpart Lynk, GraceKennedy’s GK ONE app wants a piece of the digital receipt and payments pie. The new mobile app has received over J$290 million in Western Union remittances since its launch in November 2022.

The GK ONE app boasts several features, including a digital wallet, and a free companion pre-paid card which can be used anywhere Visa is accepted locally, online, or abroad.

This is another of GraceKennedy’s push to build out its Grace Kennedy Financial Group market reach. The group currently offers banking, insurance, pensions, investments, and a range of other financial services.

This push into fintech is a wise decision in my opinion. It’s an area that is new to Jamaica and the Caribbean and is in need of development. GraceKennedy Limited (GK) is one of the largest conglomerates in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean and is the perfect entity to take on this challenge.

Fintech is not an easy area to get into let alone dominate it due to the rapidly changing nature of technology. With the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), this is even more evident and requires a large amount of capital and expertise.

GraceKennedy’s economies of scale give it the leverage it requires to do this and I can only see the upside for the group as a whole. Globally, the fintech market is projected to reach a value of USD 556.58 Billion by the year 2030. By this estimate, Grace is sure to make a killing even with having only a small portion of the market share.

I welcome this undertaking by GK because competition is needed in this space to offer customers like myself the best products, and prices which will ultimately make it easy to live and do business in Jamaica by offering a world-class financial ecosystem.

China retaliates with sanctions against United States firms as sanction war heats up

China is beginning to focus on the interests of the West in the country after five years of snowballing of the US leading trade and technology under Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

In the past two months, Chinese authorities have imposed new sanctions on US arms companies Lockheed Martin and Raytheon, launched an investigation into US chipmaker Micron, raided +US service provider Mintz and arrested local officials, arrested a CEO of the Japanese group Astellas Pharma and beat Deloitte in London with a good record.

President Xi Jinping’s administration is currently considering restricting the West’s access to critical infrastructure and technology for the global auto industry, according to a study by the Ministry of Commerce. The response to what Beijing describes as a US-led “technological blockade” reveals Xi’s plan to focus on industry and trade with little risk of undermining China’s interests.

Paul Haenle, a former China adviser to US President George W. Bush, said, “China has not abandoned its strategy of self-restraint to move to a new level of full retaliation, but they will use the operation to select companies to show their anger and Barack Obama.

However, the decision to carry out raids and arrest employees of foreign companies has made people aware that Beijing will step up its containment diplomacy if its relations with the West worsen. Mintz’s case with Astellas has led to an urgent review of employee safety and the suspension of some travel plans in China, two people from the foreign risk consultancy said.

“It’s a wake-up call for the industry,” one of the people said. “It’s hard for active players – the level of paranoia in China is high – but it also affects service companies and blue chip groups like Bain, McKinsey, and Boston Consulting Group.”

Experts say Japan is the most vulnerable to detention diplomacy in Beijing because it does not have its own sophisticated intelligence agency and lacks the resources to negotiate the return of its citizens.

Since China passed the anti-intelligence law in 2014, 17 Japanese citizens have been detained. According to Japan’s foreign ministry, five of them, including an Astellas employee, are still in custody.

In February, Beijing imposed new sanctions on Lockheed and Raytheon, two of the largest US defense companies. The move reflected Chinese opposition to arms sales to Taiwan but had little trade impact because the group was not allowed to sell arms to China. Beijing’s investigation into Micron, conducted last month in the country’s defense ministry, is seen as a clear sign of Xi’s growing retaliatory power.

Dexter Roberts, a fellow at the Atlantic Council, a Washington think tank, said he was surprised by Beijing’s arrest because the US-led campaign is to cut off China’s explosive technology from the ground up. “Fell in the heart of global China. high technology”. ambitious”.

Despite Beijing’s anger, Xi’s economic planners fear undermining efforts to use foreign investors to help rebuild China’s economy after the pandemic.

This means that Beijing should avoid taking action against companies and institutions that are considered important for economic recovery. “It all comes down to the fact that China is facing a lot of challenges this year, especially economically,” Roberts said.

“The last thing they need to do is have an even worse relationship with the distracted United States.” Following the Treasury Department’s $31 million audit of Deloitte for audit weaknesses, experts said they expect increased pressure on the Big Four accounting firms.

Cheng Lin, a professor of finance at the China Europe International Business School in Shanghai, said that despite the quality of research that has long been a problem with foreign companies in the region, “the main drivers” are Beijing’s data concerns with national security.

The auto industry is also preparing for the results of the Commerce Department’s 2022 technology export ban, including possible controls on some of the world’s rarest materials and lidar technology used in the mapping of driverless cars.

Tu Le, the founder of Sino Auto Insights, a Beijing-based think tank, said that any move China makes to “control its capacity in extraction and refining” is what the electric car industry is doing. The use will create “immediate concern for the United States, Europe.” Japan and Korea.” Government”.

These restrictions can be used as leverage to negotiate the relaxation of semiconductor controls, said Arthur Kroeber, head of research at Gavekal Dragonomics, a Beijing consultancy.

Soo Kim, a former CIA analyst, and expert on Asia expect Beijing’s retaliatory measures to expand because there appears to be no short-term solution to US-China relations. “With so many games in the US-China rivalry, Beijing has a lot of levers to lean on,”

Google enters AI race with a stream of new updates to be released

0

Google is currently working on a list of AI tools to be released over the upcoming months. These tools are seen to be a countermove to competitors like Microsoft which is currently integrating AI tools across its products. Information about these products has been sparse but they are being developed under the codename “Magi”.

Analysts are looking for major changes to Google Chrome which will have an integrated chatbot similar to how Microsoft’s Bing is integrating the ChatGPT and other tools coming from OpenAI which is an AI research company they have been pouring billions into over the years and even more so recently.

Google is now being forced to pivot drastically in this new direction due to the fact that sophisticated chatbots are now becoming popular. Analysts are also looking at the fact of how impactful these tools will be for Google. ChatGPT became the fastest-rising internet product in a matter of months. Can Google compete with such technology given the current network effects it has?

This a major question, additionally, ChatGPT is a direct threat to Google’s bottom line. Users who use the tool don’t have to do many Google searches which will have a major impact on ad revenue. It would be interesting to see how Google will compete, if they compete directly, they would have to rethink their entire approach to monetization.

Regardless, competition is good for everyone because it will force competitors to create better products.

Why im bullish on Jamaica and you should too

0

Jamaica is a small but well-known country worldwide due to various factors, mostly good and some bad. The country is most known for reggae music through the works of Bob Marley and other reggae musicians, it is also known for track and field due to the performance of the world’s fastest man Usain Bolt.

The country is also one of the world’s best tourist spots and derives a lot if not most of the country’s revenue from tourism. In recent years the country is diversifying into other sectors such as finance, real estate, healthcare, etc.

Jamaica is currently undergoing a massive development boom. Everywhere you go there are new high-rise buildings being constructed. There are new companies being listed on the Jamaica Stock Exchange every few months and companies hoping to get listed.

This most notable development is the highway currently under construction. This development is giving way to a flurry of new potential businesses and enabling the established ones to expand right across the country. I see the highway as a catalyst for much greater developments to come.

A lot of the underdeveloped parts of the country will now see major infrastructure upgrades and businesses which in turn will raise the standard of living for the citizens and stakeholders.

This is excellent news for internal and external investors looking for new places to invest their capital. Jamaica is a democratic country governed by law, it’s an English-speaking country and has a highly skilled and young workforce ready and waiting for new jobs.

Jamaica is the country where I plan on building my wealth and I think you should also explore this option as well before it’s too late. Getting in early is the way to secure your spot and take advantage of the economic boom.

AgentGPT: Autonomous AI agents are coming

0

The artificial intelligence space is changing quite rapidly, every day there seems to be a new innovation. ChatGpt is now becoming the backend or the underlying architecture for a lot of new applications.

A very interesting use case that is taking the AI world by storm is AgentGPT, these are built on top of the thesis of deploying AI agents that can act on behalf of your request for a given task.

All these agents can be deployed within your browser and act as your assistant. The interesting thing is not what you instruct them to do but how they go about executing it.

If you tell them to do a task such as create a report on America’s top 10 stocks, you can literally see these mechanisms executing some sort of chain of thought reasoning in a step-by-step fashion similar to how humans would think. The agent would then go about finding the best possible way to execute such a task.

This is a very important technology that is in its initial stages. You also have other types of systems similar to AgentGPT in the space that I will touch on in other posts. But the overall implications for technologies in this category are going to be huge, it will be a force multiplier.

These technologies could do miscellaneous and mundane tasks for you online while you can focus on the important and creative ones.

For starters, you can give AgentGPT a try on their website before they completely put it behind a paywall. The AI field has reached an inflection point and we are just starting to see the potential of what these technologies can do. We are in the very early stages; this decade will definitely be a very interesting one.

FESCO acquires Wilson Beck LPG Limited

0

Future Energy Source Company Limited (FESCO) has acquired a liquified petroleum gas business, Wilson Beck LPG Limited. This deal comes against the backdrop of strong numbers posted by the gas station company for the quarter that ended December 2022 recorded operating profits of J$155.59 million, which reflects a 134.10% increase which equates to J$89.127 million year-over-year increase.

The transaction is a part of a wider strategic initiative where the company will be entering in the home market with a cooking gas brand called, FESGAS. FESCO Managing Director Jeremy Barnes, sees this as an important deal to further expand the company’s reach and create more value.

He states, “The assets appealed to us for many reasons, including the plant’s capacity and throughput. We are intentional about opportunities that allow us to expand our value-added products and to efficiently serve our broad customer-base. Our shareholders have placed a lot of confidence in FESCO, and we are working to continue to deliver meaningfully, especially on the goals outlined in our Prospectus.”

On the other side of the deal, Wilson Beck LPG Managing Director Gregory Beck sees this deal as the right choice given current movements in the market.

“Based on the changing landscape of this industry, it was the right move for us at this time. FESCO will inherit a state-of-the-art LPG filling plant at Bernard Lodge, St Catherine as well as a loyal group of gas dealers from the distribution network we have built in south-eastern Jamaica.”

This is an important step for FESCO to further expand its business and provide more value to customers.

Tech leaders are sounding the alarm over ChatGPT like models

0

Currently, some tech leaders within the AI community are seeking a 6-month on research within the space of Natural Language Models. Recently ChatGPT released a new version of their system called ChatGPT-4, which is less than 6 months from the last publication.

This is incredible in the AI space and these systems are becoming capable of displacing a lot of knowledge workers in certain jobs currently.

This is probably one of the main reasons why some leaders in tech are seeking to put on a pause on everything.  Even though that has good intentions from a game theory perspective, it doesn’t look like it is practical at all given that global leaders are also caught in an AI race. If the United States pause, what does that say about China, Russia, etc?

In technology, leaps such as what is happening currently in the AI space is a quantum leap, similar to how technologies such as the internet, printing press, computers, etc changed the way how we work, AI will do the very same.

Another reason why the pause is not feasible is because of the implications for other companies in this super competitive space at the moment pouring billions into the market who wants to lead in this future space.

If a company such as OpenAI stops producing ChatGPT models what does that say about Google and others who are lagging behind, they might break the rules and want to catch up so it’s not going to be easy at all.

From my perspective I don’t see it stopping either, AI is our new reality, and we have to accept and embrace it. Too much is at stake at the moment for large tech companies to put a pause on technology as powerful as AI.

China working on 6G technology to dominate the next decade

0

One of China’s largest telecommunication firms, China Unicom is in the early stages of creating a 6G system. They are hoping that they can have a working prototype by 2025.

Chairman of Unicom and Chief Executive Liu Liehong, was speaking at China Development Forum, which is a two-day conference that talks about economics, technology, and other sectors impacting society.

Ministry of Industry and Information Technology Jin Zhuanglong was also at the conference where he said that China is leading the pace for 6G research and development.

Given China’s lead in 5G technology which isn’t evenly distributed around the world equally as yet, the fact that they are already working at 6G technology is pretty impressive.

China’s 5G technology even though impressive has garnered backlash from Washington which sees it as a threat. Huawei who is heavily invested in this space was basically blacklisted in certain countries and came under increasing pressure from Washington.

Currently, China and the United States are in a sort of a technological battle, Washington is noticing the increasing sophistication of Chinese technology which could even be utilized in military technology.

Given the fact that this technology is probably a decade away let’s see how those in Washington responds to this.

Google PaLM-E: A multimodal language model in response to ChatGPT

0

Earlier in March Google quietly released a new language model or an upgraded one that is supposed to be a response to ChatGPT. Similar to ChatGPT, it can do questions and answers and various other language tasks. The multimodal aspect of it makes it quite interesting because as stated on the blog it can be used for various tasks in robotics and other areas.

“On the one hand, PaLM-E was primarily developed to be a model for robotics, and it solves a variety of tasks on multiple types of robots and for multiple modalities (images, robot states, and neural scene representations).

At the same time, PaLM-E is a generally-capable vision-and-language model. It can perform visual tasks, such as describing images, detecting objects, or classifying scenes, and is also proficient at language tasks, like quoting poetry, solving math equations, or generating code.”

PaLM-E is a combination of various models such as the PaLM which was another language model that was released earlier and Vit-22B which is an advanced vision model that has state-of-the-art results. The interesting thing about PaLM-E is that it gives us a glimpse into what Google is trying to aim for, where ChatGPT was seen as a consumer-facing application, PaLM-E seems to be focused on robotics which is a highly lucrative field.

Traditionally, language models are trained with textual input, with PaLM-E it is mainly trained with raw streams of robot sensory data. This is an interesting new development because models in this category can absorb all sorts of data from the environment and then be updated and calibrated in real-time which is similar to how humans operate by absorbing data through our bodily senses.

PaLM-E seems like a very promising system, it might not have the buzz around it such as ChatGPT but is a powerful one nonetheless, given the fact that this one is robotic-based, there will be some interesting applications coming from this model.
