The Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut

0

Ghost of Tsushima was one of 2020’s best games. Slick combat and stealth, breathtaking visuals, and a mature and thoughtful story about the nature of loss. It also featured one of the most memorable game endings in many years. What more could be added that wouldn’t feel like a retread? Quite a bit, as it turns out.

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut includes everything that made the original release great, and is available on PS4 or PS5 as either a standalone purchase, or an upgrade from your existing copy. If you haven’t played the game yet, now is an ideal time.

The new version includes some bonus upgrade items, like skins and character improvement points, and access to a director’s commentary with input from a Japanese historian on the actual events and period depicted in the game.

There’s also the excellent Legends cooperative multiplayer experience, which is well worth playing. If playing on PS5, you also get some fun new DualSense haptic feedback on your controller, new 3D audio when using compatible headphones, and a gorgeous 4K resolution targeting 60fps, which makes for an exceptionally stunning display in a game that already looked very pretty.

However, the big draw is undoubtedly the Iki Island expansion, a multi-hour new campaign built to impress. Acting simultaneously as a standalone story and as a coda and wrap-up for Jin’s character arc, the adventures players uncover on Iki Island are well worth the price of admission.

It would be a stretch to characterize this new area and its missions as a true sequel, but several new story developments, unique side missions, and novel upgrades feel more substantial than I had expected.

Closing an important story loop for the main character also leads to a very satisfying addendum to Jin’s narrative, without losing any of the impact of the main game’s powerful conclusion.

Iki Island is set apart from the main game sections on Tsushima, and if desired, you can fast travel back and forth between the two landmasses. To get things going, Jin learns of an impending second invasion of Mongol troops who have amassed on the nearby smaller island and sets out to halt the threat.

That means that there’s a new map to uncover, and since Jin’s legend is unknown there, it’s another place to build that legend up (and earn the corresponding technique points). Crucially, we also learn that Iki Island is where Jin witnessed his father’s death as a child.

The conflict that led to that personal tragedy is a big focus in the expansion. That means that Jin must travel incognito without the markings of his Sakai clan status – hidden identities always lead to a little added tension.
Conceptually, the story and its conflict act as a leverage point to explore Jin’s haunted past. Without spoiling exactly how, Jin is poisoned shortly after his arrival on Iki, leading him to maddening visions about the many traumatic events of his life.

These manifest in-game as visual and auditory hallucinations, forcing the honor-bound warrior to confront his guilt and relive some of his worst moments, both from early life and those witnessed during the main game.

Along the way, Sucker Punch has injected several new gameplay tweaks to keep things interesting. One of the most significant changes in combat is the addition of shamans, an enemy type whose chants goad the other enemy fighters into devastating battle trances. Inevitably, these shamans hang out at the back of a squad, so players must dodge and slash their way through the enraged regular enemies to take on the shaman first.

Normal enemies are also very dangerous, even for players who’ve maxed out their samurai abilities. Just a couple of hits from one of these foes are enough to deplete a full health bar. Many enemies switch weapons mid-battle, demanding you monitor your stances carefully. Enemy positioning leads to challenging tactical dilemmas about how to manage a fight. In short, it’s all pretty challenging.

Thankfully, Jin also finds some fun new tricks on the island of Iki. Chief among them is the new horse charge. Jin’s faithful steed, hardened by many battles, can now surge forth and trample foes in his path to devastating effect. Enabled in short bursts that you might consider a super-gallop, the action is incredibly potent when employed against larger groups. The horse charge drains Resolve quickly, but it can be a worthwhile gambit to open a big fight.

Iki Island also features some new charms to enhance your battle and stealth process, but it’s here that the expansion failed a bit to tweak the playstyle. In a dilemma confronted by almost every game expansion ever created, you start the game with a playstyle and chosen upgrades uniquely suited to your preference.

While some of the new charms are interesting, as well as gorgeous new armor with its own unique bonuses, it’s hard to beat out that fully upgraded loadout you’ve been rocking since the end of the base game – especially considering the challenge level of the content.

Several existing side activities, like crafting haikus and chopping bamboo strikes, are joined by some clever new additions. Dedicated bow enthusiasts are sure to enjoy the archery challenges, which offer a chance to meaningfully improve the Charm of Concentration, extending your time slowdown while firing off arrows.

Beyond bullet point feature lists, Iki Island is also a wonderfully designed playspace. Likely informed by the work undertaken to craft the base game, Sucker Punch has put together a lovely and compact adventure that flows smoothly from beginning to end. New platforming locations are great fun. Side missions to help the inhabitants of the island are thoughtfully written and varied in their objectives.

The main flow of tasks moves seamlessly between big army battles, challenging duels, and sneaky infiltrations. On top of it all is the developer’s attention to artistic grandeur; Iki Island is a land of vibrantly colored forests, stark wave-washed cliffs, and beautiful sunsets. The locale feels like an extension of the art style seen on Tsushima, but with its own identity.

Exclusive Look At Serial Cleaners

0

Serial Cleaners is the upcoming sequel to 2017’s Serial Cleaner. Whereas in the first game, you played a single cleaner, as in a person paid to clean up crime scenes, this time you control four of them.

It’s slated to arrive in early 2022, and we have an exclusive trailer showing off the youngest member of your crew. Meet Erin Reed, AKA Vip3r.

The four cleaners are unique in both personality and skill set. That said, Serial Cleaners remains a single-player experience, and you’ll alternate between characters to relieve grisly murder scenes of their evidence. The squad includes Bob C. Leaner, a well-rounded character ideal for those who prefer a sneaky, methodical approach.

Lati is a nimble cleaner adept at climbing, jumping, and sliding out of danger. Psycho Haldor “Hal” Boen takes a more in-your-face approach by knocking out guards and slicing up dead bodies using his trusty chainsaw. Finally, there’s our girl Vip3r.

Vip3r may not be the most physically imposing member of her squad of cleaners, but her high intellect and tech-savvy prowess make up for it. She’s able to hack into computer terminals and short-circuit electrical devices across long distances, adding a high-tech edge to a dirty profession.

The first game was all about stealthily mopping up bloody floors and removing bodies while avoiding guards and other hazards. Serial Cleaners ups the ante with more open-ended map designs, and non-linear storytelling complete with dialogue choices (and consequences).

Serial Cleaners also drops its setting 20 years into the future, taking place in 1999 in New York City on New Year’s Eve. Serial Cleaners come to PC and unspecified consoles early next year.

Cyberpunk 2077’s 1.3 Patch Address Myriad Of Issues And Adds Free Content

0

CD Projekt Red is still righting the ship that is Cyberpunk 2077, and its latest patch plugs up some more gameplay, performance, and stability leaks while also tossing in some free, albeit small, pieces of content.

Patch 1.3, the follow-up to the substantial 1.2 update, is now live for all versions of the sandbox RPG and aims to make the wild ride across Night City a lot smoother.

Upon downloading the patch you’ll be treated to three new pieces of content. First up is an alternative appearance for Johnny Silverhand, which you access in the settings tab under “Additional Content.” You also get the Rare/Iconic quality multilayered syn-leather Deltajock and Luminescent Punk jackets.

After completing the mission “The Ride” and receiving Viktor’s message, you can find these jackets in V’s apartment stash. Lastly, you gain access to the Archer Quartz “Bandit” vehicle, which you can either buy or earn as a reward depending on your choices after finishing up the “Ghost Town” job and getting a message from either Dakota or Rogue.

Cyberpunk 2077 launched in a pretty poor state last December, with the PC version proving to be the most stable build while the game was largely a mess on last-gen consoles.

The title only recently returned to sale on the PlayStation Store after Sony pulled it last year due to quality concerns. CD Projekt Red has been through the wringer over the last nine months or so, dealing with internal workplace disputes, class-action lawsuits, and even falling victim to a major cyberattack.

Things seem to have somewhat settled down (for now), so hopefully, the team can continue to focus on shining up Cyberpunk as much as possible while also preparing the native PS5/Xbox Series X versions.

Vilicom and Virgin Media O2 launch commercial Neutral Host In-Building

0

20th August 2021: Today, Vilicom announces that it has successfully rolled out one of the first commercial sites with Virgin Media O2, built upon its Open RAN technology platform in adherence with the specifications laid out by the Joint Operators Technical Specifications for Neutral Host In-Building (JOTS NHIB) systems.

After several months of dedicated testing of functionality, interoperability, and cyber-security, Vilicom delivered full availability of its cloud-based network platform to enhance indoor coverage to Virgin Media O2’s subscribers.

  • Vilicom are extending Virgin Media O2’s 4G mobile coverage to businesses and its subscribers with one of the first inbuilding commercial deployment following NHIB standards
  • The new solution’s cost-effective model will enhance Virgin Media O2’s existing network service, improving voice quality and data speeds overcoming indoor blackspots
  • Vilicom and Virgin Media O2 are committed to using innovative Open RAN and cloud-based technologies which offer competitive commercial and environmentally friendly solutions to the market of inbuilding mobile connectivity

Vilicom’s infrastructure has been developed in partnership with Mavenir using its Cloud RAN technology, and unlike legacy solutions, is a fully digital business model.

The Connectivity-as-a Service (CaaS) network platform streamlines site deployment, implements a full stack of network management and operations, offers fully integrated security features, and aims to reduce the cost and space requirements of inbuilding 4G, and later 5G, public and private mobile connectivity for the UK’s industries and businesses.

As mobile connectivity helps power the country’s recovery, businesses of all sizes, across the UK, require reliable 4G connectivity indoors. The integration of Vilicom’s virtualized O-RAN platform with all UK-based Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) will meet this demand, and businesses, industries, and subscribers within the coverage area of Vilicom’s CaaS network will benefit from an enhanced network service including improved voice quality and data speeds.

This model also benefits MNOs by offloading traffic from macrocells to the inbuilding networks, making sure that traffic generated by indoor subscribers is served indoors, thus saving the capacity of macrocells and reducing the need for expansion investment.

Sean Keating, CEO of Vilicom commented: “Delivering this milestone achievement is testament to Vilicom’s commitment to implementing the latest approved technology by the Mobile Network Operators to solve indoor mobile connectivity.

We are proud to deliver this service live in conjunction with Virgin Media O2 and this virtual platform signals a new way forward for those in need of mobile connectivity in commercial real estate, built-to-rent, and industry throughout the UK.

This service will translate to significant cost savings and help reduce carbon footprint across the built environment as much of the power-intensive infrastructure is hosted off-premise in our Data Centre.”

Omar Calvo, Director of Radio Engineering at Virgin Media O2, said: “Virgin Media O2’s neutral host solutions will deliver great in-building 4G coverage and capacity, providing a greener and more efficient network.

We’re constantly looking to innovate our range of network products, and our partnership with Vilicom has allowed us to develop this NHIB technique to help transform the capabilities of in-building cellular coverage.”

Can Drinking coffee help cyclists achieve peak performance?

0

With the rise in the popularity in cycling across Europe, a new summary of the latest published research by the Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee highlights the impact that consuming caffeine, through just a few cups of coffee, can have on cycling performance.

By 2030, Europeans are expected to buy an extra 10 million bicycles per year, a 47% increase from the annual figure in 2019, as more people cycle for fitness, pleasure and increasingly for commuting, with changes in behavior due to Covid.

In light of this and with cycling prominent at major events this summer, this summary shows how for both professional and enthusiast cyclists, coffee may be a valuable addition to their diet or regime.

Dr Neil Clarke PhD, Course Director for MSc. Sports and Exercise Nutrition at Coventry University, said:
“Drinking coffee has a broad range of benefits that can improve performance from a physical perspective. These include, but are not limited to:

Improved muscular endurance, movement velocity and muscular strength. Performance might also be increase due to the release of endorphins which attenuates the pain sensation and rating of perceived exertion during exercise, decreasing the perceptions of effort.

In addition, factors such as improved reaction time, cognition, and mood are also likely to have a positive influence on performance. Whether cycling competitively or for recreational purposes, there is evidence that drinking a cup of coffee may enhance performance.”

Juliet Elliott, a multi-disciplined bike racer, named one of Bike Biz’s ‘Most Influential Women in Cycling’ and a ‘Woman to Watch’ by YouTube said:
“I normally train for around twelve hours a week and take part in Endurance, Gravel and Bikepacking races and events such as Grinduro and Tuscany Trail. What I eat and drink is critical to my performance and I enjoy coffee being a part of my daily routine.

I always start my day with a coffee, enjoying the first one with breakfast then usually having another before I head to the gym or out on a ride. I’m a big fan of coffee, it makes me feel energised and mentally alert, plus I’m fully aware of the performance benefits – I can pedal harder, faster and for longer.”

The science on coffee and sports performance
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that there is an association between caffeine consumption and an increase in endurance performance (aerobic exercise lasting over 5 minutes), endurance capacity and a reduction in the rated perceived effort or exertion during exercise.

This is based on levels of 3mg of caffeine per kg of body weight, which for a 70kg person is 210mg or 2-3 cups of coffee. Reviews also suggest that the effect on aerobic performance (longer duration), in activities such as cycling, seems to be greater than anaerobic exercise (quick bursts).

In fact, aerobic endurance appears to be the form of exercise with the most consistent moderate-to-large benefits from caffeine consumption.

Improvements for endurance performance
The Effects of Pre-exercise Caffeinated Coffee Ingestion on Endurance Performance: An evidence-based review suggested that coffee may act as an aid to improve performance in endurance cycling and running.

Coffee providing 3-8.1 mg/kg (1.36-3.68 mg/lb) of caffeine may be consumed as a safe alternative to anhydrous caffeine to improve endurance performance.

Additionally, a further meta-analysis reviewing the effects of caffeine on endurance performance when taken in moderate doses (3-6 mg/kg), suggested it could be supportive, particularly in sports where a small increase in endurance performance can lead to significant differences in placements, as athletes are often separated by small margins.

This review also found that caffeine has a small but evident improvement overall on endurance performance compared to placebo.

Time trial impact
When it comes to timed races, a study found that performances during a time trial were significantly faster (∼5.0%) following consumption of both caffeine and coffee when compared to a placebo and decaffeinated coffee. This suggests that both caffeine (5 mg/kg/BW) and coffee (5 mg/kg/BW) consumed 1 hour prior to exercise can improve endurance exercise performance.

Dr. Neil Clarke Ph.D. continues:
“The ingestion of caffeine can stimulate energy production. Although the action of caffeine on the central nervous system has been widely accepted as the primary mechanism by which caffeine alters performance – caffeine may modulate central fatigue, a type of fatigue caused by neurochemical changes in the brain associated with prolonged exercise, and in turn influence ratings of perceived exertion, perceived pain, and levels of vigour, all of which are likely to lead to improvements in performance.”

“Caffeine ingestion can be ergogenic for endurance, high-intensity and resistance exercise, as well as team sports. The beneficial effect is generally independent of training status, habitual caffeine intake, and sex. However, the response to caffeine ingestion is individual, so it is important to practice with caffeine during a training session or friendly fixture, before using it for an important event.”

Performance dependent on individual responses to coffee
It is worth noting that effects on performance may depend on varying individual responses to caffeine, which is often determined by peoples’ genetic makeup.

As such, athletes who are positive caffeine responders, and see greater effects from caffeine intake, may consider drinking coffee before the competition to improve anaerobic performance.

Selah Marley wows with her debut single

0

As she begins her career, Marley says that her mother, Lauryn Hill, has been a source of inspiration and guidance. “My mom has been a guiding light,” she explained. “In the sense of creativity, she always told me not to rush. She always told me to take my time.

The industry is scary; there is so much pressure on these poor 18-, 19-, 20-year-olds, because once you drop one thing, it’s like, ‘What’s next? What’s next?’ The industry is not stable.

It feels like you have to keep up, because you always feel like you’ll be forgotten. … She actually texted me the other day about that! She said, ‘Selah, you are enough! You don’t have to be some guru or number-one Grammy [winner], you are enough as you are.’

That meant a lot to me. With my mom, there is [duality], because on one side you’re my mom, and on the other, ‘You’re Lauryn Hill.’ Sometimes we have conversations that are Lauryn Hill to Selah and other times we have conversations that are mom to daughter, and both of those are fused. Because while we’re having a mom-to-daughter conversation, it’s also mentee to teacher. It goes both ways. It’s cool because at the end of the day I have someone who understands.”

The History of Bob Marley and The Wailers

0

More than three decades after Bob Marley’s death, Bob Marley and the Wailers remain among the most famous bands of all time. With over 75 million albums sold worldwide, an appeal that spans generations, and still influencing artists today, their legacy is something most other acts only dream of.

Their evolution from an early-60s Jamaican ska group to international superstars was not just improbable, but unprecedented for an act from a third-world nation.

Bob Marley and the Wailers: The Ultimate Illustrated History documents Marley’s and the Wailers’ role in spreading reggae music around the globe. Author Richie Unterberger examines all aspects of their career, from the early days, their recorded output, as well as the roles and careers of other Wailers, most notably Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer.

The resulting package is authoritative but also beautifully designed and illustrated, featuring 300 images of rare memorabilia, as well as fantastic performance and candid off-stage photography. Additionally, Unterberger delves into the influence of the Rastafari movement on the musicians’ lives and music, and on controversial incidents like the breakup of the original Wailers in the mid-1970s; the attempted assassination of Marley in 1976; and his premature death in 1981. This big, hardcover book illuminates Bob Marley and the Wailers’ life and times like no other history of the band.

Richie Unterberger is the author of numerous rock history books, and his most recent book is Fleetwood Mac: The Ultimate Illustrated History. Unterberger is also the author of The Rough Guide to Music USA, a guidebook to the evolution of regional popular music styles throughout America in the 20th century, and The Rough Guide to Jimi Hendrix.

Despite Regulatory Crackdown, Beijing Owns Stakes in ByteDance, Weibo Domestic Entities

0

The Chinese government has taken stakes in Chinese entities owned by tech companies ByteDance and Sina Weibo, corporate records showed, amid a widening regulatory crackdown on the industry. The ByteDance unit stake transfer was registered on April 30, 2021

WangTouZhongWen (Beijing) Technology, which is owned by three Chinese state entities including a fund backed by China’s main Internet watchdog, has a 1 percent stake in Beijing ByteDance Technology, according to shareholder data from the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System.

The stake gives Beijing a board seat at the subsidiary which holds some of the business licenses covering Douyin and Toutiao, some of ByteDance’s most popular domestic apps, a source familiar with the matter said.

It does not give not give the Chinese government any stake in the firm’s hit short video app TikTok, the source said. TikTok is not available in China.
The Chinese subsidiary “only relates to some of ByteDance’s China-market video and information platforms, and holds some of the licenses they require to operate under local law,” a ByteDance spokesperson told Reuters on Monday.

An affiliate, WangTouTongDa (Beijing) Technology, similarly holds a 1 percent stake in Beijing Weimeng Technology, Weibo’s main domestic subsidiary, according to a separate government data report and filings it made to the US securities regulator.

Weibo did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In the SEC filing, it said its unit received the investment from WangTouTongDa in April 2020 and that WangTouTongDa (Beijing) Technology had the right to appoint a director to Weiming’s three-member board.

Corporate information app Tianyancha said the ByteDance unit stake transfer was registered on April 30, 2021.

Although Chinese regulators have clamped down on a range of sectors, tech has come in for some of the harshest measures to date.

Regulators say they are concerned about issues ranging from its technology giants’ market power to their management of user data, and have launched antitrust probes, canceled deals, and published new guidance for the sector.

WangTouZhongWen (Beijing) Technology is co-owned by the China Internet Investment Fund, a China National Radio subsidiary, and the Beijing Cultural Investment Development Group, its company registration filing showed.

The China Internet Investment Fund, which was established by the Cyberspace Administration of China and the country’s finance ministry, fully owns WangTouTongDa (Beijing) Technology.
